May 2, 2023. Trujillo to Guadalupe. Distance 55 miles Elevation. 5,290 feet

This was a long hard ride. Fortunately there was just enough cloud cover and breeze to make it more manageable. Lots of very long, steep, windy ascents with very steep windy descents. We skipped the first town at 19km ’cause it was too soon for a break. At the next tiny town 39km the only place we found was closed. By 79km we finally found a small town with a market where we filled our water bottles.

Although the climbing was steep the terrain was changing as we head north. There were lots of very old olive tree orchards.

We rode on a very low-traffic country road most of the day and a lot of it was through very lush landscapes. As we were nearing Guadalupe we came around yet another curve in the road and saw this impressive site. Here you can see the dense foliage.

As we got closer we got a good view of the town with it’s massive Monastery.

We finally arrived at our Parador de Guadalupe.

This is our room at the hotel. I’ve never seen a hotel room with an office loft.

Here’s a glimpse of the Monastery. We’re spending two nights here so we’ll have more to report tomorrow on this massive site.
