Nanaimo

August 24, 2024

After our favorite oatmeal and tea for breakfast we dinghied back to shore and caught the 9:15 free passenger ferry over to the big city of Nanaimo.

We spent a good bit of the day exploring Nanaimo since we’ve never been here before.

First sighting was this statue. Is he a pirate or a conductor or ???

Turns out this scupture is of Frank James Ney (1918-1992) in his pirate costume. Ney was mayor of Nanaimo from 1967-1984 and 1986-1990 serving 21 years overall. Mayor Frank Ney is immortalized in bronze, standing atop a rock, dressed in the gaudy pirate costume he would wear during the town’s annual bathtub races.

Another interesting landmark was the Bastion. Originally built in 1853 by the Hudson’s Bay Company, the Bastion served a very practical purpose: It was designed to defend coal mining operations in Nanaimo.

The construction of this structure is very interesting as it can be taken apart, moved and put back together again in a new place which it did three times here on the Nanaimo waterfront.

And here’s a shot of the inside of the third floor, most all of the timbers are original!

Here’s a view looking back across the bay to the Provincial Park and our anchorage in the distance to the left.

Here is the Courthouse. It looks so much like the SPI (Superintendent of Public Instruction) building in Olympia.

The architect, Francis Rattenbury, was the architect of the Provincial Parliament buildings in Victoria. The sandstone came from Protection Island where we are moored.

Here is the Palace Hotel.

By mid-afternoon we took the passenger ferry back to the island and after a quick shower we hopped into our dinghy and rowed over to the Dinghy Dock Pub on the island next door for a great dinner.

And now I will leave you with this “Thought for the Day”.

Ladysmith to Nanaimo

August 23, 2024

(Side Note: We’ve been tied to mooring bouys the past several nights so – no internet = no blog. Once I get behind it’s hard to catch up.)

Another lazy morning except this time Annabelle joined us for oatmeal just like back home. Annabelle would often bop over in the morning and join us for breakfast. Always a special treat for us.

By 12:30 Chris and I said good bye to Ladysmith and headed north to Nanaimo. In order to get from Ladysmith to Nanaimo we had to pass through Dodds Narrow at slack tide which was at 1:25 this afternoon.

Since we were a bit ahead of schedule we poked our nose into Boat Harbor.

This was the home of Julian Madson who in the 1970’s-2000’s owned the Argonaut ll and restored her to pristine conditions. Julian passed away just a couple of years ago.

We’d never been through Dodds Narrow before so it was a new experience and very exciting. All the boats had to go single file.

This is some of the landscape we’re passing by on the other side of the Narrows.

Then it was on our way to Nanaimo with Captain Chris keeping a watchful eye.

So many empty tankers just parked.

Once in Nanaimo we snagged a mooring bouy at Saysutshun Provincial Park on Newcastle Island just across Departure Bay from Nanaimo.

Once settled in and the rain stopped, Chris inflated our new dingy and we rowed ashore for a little exploring.

This 900 acre park has 22 kilometers of trails, historical sites, and camping. Here’s an interesting site. Read the sign below to learn all about the Wheels of Stone and how and why they were made.

Back on the boat we cooked our first big dinner onboad – rice with onions, garlic, bok choy and pistachios. Yum!

Ladysmith B.C., Old Town Bakery

Ladysmith

August 22,2024

Another cozy morning on the boat. Then it was off to The Old Town Bakery

which has the best cinnamon rolls ever.

Later in the day we walked to Transfer Beach Park with a great playground and where Annabelle played in the “water pad” fountains spraying in all directions. Then Chris and I walked to the Bayview Brewery for a beer and a Deluxe BLT that must have been 4″ tall.

This evening Justin and Lauren went on a date night while we watched Annabelle and Winny the dog. Great fun for everyone.

And a beautiful sunset to top off the day!

Ganges on Salt Spring Island to Ladysmith

August 21, 2024

Started the day with a walk into town to Barb’s Buns Bakery for a tasty pastry and coffee. By 10 we were on our way to Ladysmith for a couple of nights. One thing that amazed me the first time I saw the Pacific Northwest in 1980 was how the trees grow right down to the water’s edge.

Here’s Moka chugging along.

Since we had plenty of time to get to Ladysmith we took a side trip to Thetis Island. It looks just the same as it did in 2016 the last time we were here.

As we arrived at Oyster Bay Marina at Ladysmith we passed by this log barge. This was a common sight when we first moved to the Northwest in 1980 but is very rare now-a-days.

Had a lazy afternoon, got to use the free shower at the marina, such a treat.

Later we got takeout Indian food for dinner back on the boat.

Ganges on Salt Spring Island

August 20,2024

Delicious made from scratch oatmeal for a cozy breakfast on the boat this morning. Complete with brown sugar, pecans and banana. Yummy!

Another lazy day. It’s fun revisiting many of the places we stopped at 8 years ago. Some have gotten more touristy but so far we’ve been able to find the exact place or experience as we had back then.

Here are a few pics of our day today.

The trail to Hastings House, a 1940’s hotel and restaurant.

View of Ganges Harbor and Salt Spring Marina.

Winny after her 2nd outing of the day, back on her boat all pooped out.

Justin and Annabelle slipped out for an after-dinner treat.

Tomorrow it’s off to Ladysmith just a short hop to the north of us.

Sydney – Ganges on Salt Spring Island

August 19, 2024

Had a nice lazy morning. Around 9 Chris, Lauren, Annabelle and Winny took off for a mile walk to Annabelle’s playground and then another mile and a half to Winny’s Dog Park. By 10 the rain started and lasted all day. Fortunately they are a hearty bunch.

Justin stayed aboard his boat and tele-worked. I stayed aboard our boat and cleaned up and worked on this blog.

By noon all were aboard and we headed off for Ganges on Salt Spring Island. After a leisurely cruise we docked at Salt Spring Marina and will stay here two nights. For the next few days we will be retracing the steps of our first cruise here in the Gulf Islands eight years ago on the Argonaut II.

I’ve been reviewing my blog from that trip and here’s a quote from that blog of 2016 when we stopped at Ganges.

“Once the anchor was secure we hopped in the dingy and rowed ashore for lunch at Moby’s Pub.  Such amazing food.  I had the Duck and Goat Cheese Salad with a Balsamic Reduction Vinaigrette.” I never forgot this salad and got to have it again this evening at Moby’s Pub. It’s still on the menu and just as good.

Not many photos today just lots of rain. There will be more exploring tomorrow…

Sydney BC

San Juan Island – Sydney British Columbia

August 18, 2024

Chris and I are off on another great adventure. This time it is by boat and we’re heading north. That’s all we know so far, just planning a day or two ahead at a time. Cruising with us are our son Justin, daughter-in-law Lauren, granddaughter Annabelle (almost 5!)

and their 1 year old pup Winny.

We have a new (to us) 28 foot Carolina Classic power boat (on left below). Justin and Lauren have a new (to them as of last year) 37 foot Nordic Tug (red and white below). So we are cruising together-ish.

First stop is Sydney B.C. to clear customs and spend the night at Port Sydney Marina which is right in downtown Sydney. (By the way, it only took us 45 minutes to get here from Snug Harbor in San Juan Island!)

This is a beautiful place to explore with hanging flower baskets everywhere. Lots of fun shops. Walking trails along the shore in both directions. Annabelle found a great playground at Tulista Park where she mastered the rings. And Winny found a great Dog Park where she could romp to her heart’s content.

By late afternoon the sky turned ominous

and sure enough as we were finishing dinner outside the Small Gods Brewery “down came the rain and washed us all out”. By the time we got back to the boats the sun had come out and “dried up all the rain”.

Quiet evening back on the boats and early to bed.

Essex Culinary Resort, Essex VT

Cycled 38 miles

Our last day of cycling on this tour. It was a perfect day and a wonderful tour through the countryside of Vermont. We even got to see a tree filled with fall color – at last.

The first treat of the day came at mile 22 when we were all invited to Carol’s house for cookies. She is a tandem rider who is a friend of our guides and who happens to live right on today’s route. She invited us to stop by her house for cookies.

The apple pecan brownies were amazing. Even the oranges were the best.

Then at mile 35 we passed by Browns River Bridge, no longer in use but very fun to check out.

Back at the Essex we found a nice shady spot to have a beer and disassemble the bike.

A few hours later we all gathered to take a cooking class where we prepared and cooked our own dinners. This was a very fun and delicious experience.

The Prep Tables

The result – our dinner: Fresh made pasta and Creamy Chicken Piccata. Plus a Charred Tomatoes with Bell Peppers and Mozzarella Salad.

And for dessert – Lemon Ricotta Cake! All prepared by us within about a two hour class. A very fun and different way to celebrate the end of a great bicycle tour.

Tomorrow it’s back to Boston and a flight out at 7am on Saturday morning.

Cycled 43 miles

Not much to report today. We biked north from Middlebury to Essex, a town that’s 8 miles east of our starting point in Burlington. We are staying two nights here at the Essex Culinary Resort and Spa. It was a pretty fast ride and we got here around 1pm (can’t check in until 4pm). So we congregated in The Tavern on site for a very slow leisurely lunch, then a dip in the hot tub.

Check out this interesting plant with very purple seed pods.

And this piece of art in our room.

And last but not least, I think this would win the Scarecrow Contest happening in Friday Harbor.

Tomorrow is the last day of riding on this tour.

Middlebury VT

September 26, 2023

Walked 5 miles

Today was a day of rest and relaxation at last. Middlebury is a lovely town where Middlebury College is located. There are so many old churches here, all within a few blocks of each other. Otter Creek flows through the middle of town.

Just a lazy day for us.

Even this little pooch LuLu was relaxing – asleep with her bone still in her mouth.

We did see one interesting site here.

Meet Draft Trash, the local garbage and recycle hauler. Pretty cool, eh?

And speaking of relaxing, this is where I perched on a perfect Adirondack chair and stitched to my hearts content. (You can see where these chairs are in the last picture I posted on yesterday’s blog.)

Tomorrow we ride north 43 miles to our last stop – Essex, Vermont.
