Bike Trip – Day 1

Tags

Day 1 consisted of taking a taxi from the Hotel Seifert to the Hotel Monica about 10km to the south but still in Prague. This is the starting point of our bike trip. We arranged this trip through Hooked on Cycling. They use a company called Pedalo who provided our maps and lodging and will schlep our gear every day.

We got to

IMG_20180520_162401.jpg

around mid day and spent the afternoon reconstructing our bike. Our tradition has become building the bike with a nice bottle of the local vino close by.

Later we took this little path down the hill

IMG_20180520_162504.jpg

to an interesting restaurant – Restaurace U Blahu. All the tables were made of old treadle sewing machine bases.

IMG_20180520_164942.jpg

Here we had our first schnitzel with the most amazing mashed potatoes I’ve ever tasted

IMG_20180520_171456.jpg

and a sample of their beer – not as good as the Pilsner.

The end of a lovely day.

A peaceful little stream

IMG_20180519_120249.jpg

Another amazing old door.

And the highlight of our outing was the John Lennon wall (a place recommended by your bar buddies). In the 1960’s this wall was known as the “Crying Wall” as it was covered with protest text/lyrics and art although the authorities regularly painted over it. After his murder on 8 December 1980, John Lennon became a pacifist hero for many young Czechs. Despite repeated coats of whitewash, the secret police never managed to keep it clean for long, and the Lennon Wall became a political focus for Prague youth (a lot of Western pop music was banned by the communists).

IMG_20180519_120349.jpg

And since we were in the neighborhood we stopped in the John Lennon Pub for a delightful lunch on the back patio.

IMG_20180519_120753.jpg

More wanderings in the afternoon and then dinner at an Irish pub near our hotel.

Another wonderful day of wandering the streets of Prague. So much to see.

Check out the stonework on this building.

IMG_20180518_103829.jpg

This is what it looks like up close. The flat stones are just made to look like they are not.

IMG_20180518_103807.jpg

Can you believer these cathedral spires behind this building?

IMG_20180518_094159.jpg

And a quick peek inside.

IMG_20180518_094457.jpg

Here are some more sites on our wanderings.

It’s now time for lunch. Remember our Pilsner buddies from last night? Well, they told us where they’d be working today so we found their restaurant and had a popular local dish.

A few more sites on our walk back to the hotel.

We came upon this simple church in a neighborhood

and peeked in – WoW

IMG_20180518_155713.jpg

After relaxing in our hotel for awhile we headed out around 2000 to a nearby park to do what the locals do. Stop in the park’s beer garden, grab a brew or two and find your spot on the grass to watch the sunset. See the castle in the distance?

A lovely way to end the day.

Prague – Day 1

Our taxi arrived right at 0900 and whisked us off to the Central train station in Vienna. Once there, it took us awhile to figure out the system. There are many different train companies each with their own trains, rates, timetables and ticket offices. We’d heard about a special deal with RegioJet – only 15 euros per/person Vienna to Prague. As we searched for their ticket office we learned that you can only order tickets on line. So at the last second Chris was able to figure out how to do that on his phone and ordered the tickets just as out train was pulling into the station.

We jumped aboard with our two suitcases and the giant tandem box trying to maneuver inside the car and as the train was about to leave the station the train attendant said “no no that’s too big” which was true as it certainly wouldn’t fit down the aisle or anywhere else so we agreed that we could leave it right at the front of the car where we’d gotten on. It just barely fit without blocking the door to the toilet.

Once we got settled into our seats we had a lovely five-hour ride to Prague while sipping on some local vino.

IMG_20180517_105814.jpg

Once we arrived we hopped into a taxi/van that took us to our hotel – The Hotel Seifert.

A wonderful place that serves a huge breakfast with lots of options. It’s also in a great location.

After breakfast we headed out to explore the city of Prague on foot. Our plan was to just wander and see what we see. Lucky for me, Chris (almost) never gets lost. Here are some of the sites as we wandered.

One of our goals was to see the Astronomical Clock. This is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world and was built six centuries ago.

IMG_20180517_175030.jpg

But due to repairs it was not in operation so instead we climbed to the top of the clock tower for a look around the city.

Here’s a cool snap I took of the climb up to the top.

IMG_20180517_181728.jpg

Since it was getting late we wandered back toward the hotel looking for a place to get a small bite to eat for dinner. We made it all the way back to the hotel and were just pondering this tiny place across the street

when two

IMG_20180517_211927.jpg

reps ushered us inside because they were so excited about their beer and wanted to show us how to make the perfect pour. They took us behind the bar and had us each pour our own beer from the tap in the very special Pilsner Urquell way – with lots of creamy head.

So, of course, we had to stay for dinner. Here we learned about Croquettes.

These are deep fried potato balls filled with yummy stuff inside. (See list of goodies above.)

Europe Here We Come

So, we’re off on another great adventure. This time we’ll be biking from Prague to Vienna. This is our 40th wedding anniversary gift to ourselves. We booked this trip through Hooked on Cycling/Hiking and is not a group ride, we’re on our own. They arrange all our hotels and they schlep our gear!

Our travel plans entail flying into Vienna, taking the train to Prague, biking back to Vienna and flying home from there. Easy enough except . . . we have a giant tandem box to contend with. Once we start the ride Hooked on Cycling will move the box.

We flew out of LAX on Air New Zealand on Tuesday May 15 and arrived at Heathrow London on Wednesday, then British Airways to Vienna arriving around 1900. We stayed at a great little place in the little village of Maria Ellend not far from the airport – Mikrohaus Apartment.

My plan was to have the host help us make arrangements for getting to the train station in the morning. This turned into quite the friendly scramble since she did not speak much English and of course we don’t speak Czech or German. But she called a friend who helped with translation and booked a taxi to pick us up at 0900. Perfect.

It was getting late and the only place to eat nearby that was open was Cafe Auszeit. So our first meal in Austria was pizza and beer with the hard smoking locals watching the soccer game on the tele.

IMG_20180516_210158.jpg

Then off to bed to catch up on a lot of lost sleep.

Virginia Beach

Tags

We had big plans for today but it turns out everything is closed on Mondays. So, this afternoon we drove over to Virginia Beach to check it out.

IMG_20180416_104610.jpg

It was even windier than yesterday.

IMG_20180416_120120.jpg

There is so much Naval presence around here. It’s amazing. This monument by local artist Michael Maiden was one of my favorites.

“Naval Homecoming”

We had an amazing dinner at No Frills Bar and Grill. Not only did we have great crab cakes but we also experienced our first Potato Perogies (Pierogi). These are potato dumplings and were covered in cheddar cheese, sour cream, bacon and green onions. YUM!

The finality for the day was this bumpersticker we saw as we were leaving.

A Walk Through History

Tags

Greetings from Norfolk, Virginia. We’re just here for a week while Chris facilitates an Environmental Negotiations class for the Navy. We arrived early so we could explore the area.

It’s a cloudy day and very very windy. Our first stop on our little tour is historic Jamestown. In 1607 this town became the home to the first permanent English settlement in North America. This is now a “Colonial National Historical Park” encompassing the entire 1,500 acre island.

Captain John Smith, one of the founding fathers, later became the governor of Virginia.

Next stop – Williamsburg.

Then it was off to Yorktown

Lots of history in this neck of the woods. Now it’s time for a hunt for the best crab cakes.

It’s a beautiful but windy morning.  We left the dock at 8:20

P1070531

but because this big boat can’t turn left it was impossible to back out of our slip to the right and head for the jetty so instead Justin had to back out to the right and spin the boat around in a very tiny space.  Once again, it was amazing to watch.  It seemed like he worked at it for an hour but it took less than ten minutes.

By 8:30 we were on our way home.

P1070535

It’s 80 miles and we’re not sure if we can do it in one long day or not.  It all depends on catching the tides just right especially in Deception Pass.  Also, the winds are expected to build to gale force by this afternoon…

Once underway, all was well for the first couple of hours, then we hit a wall of fog.

P1070536

Every two minutes Chris stepped out onto the bow and blew the warning horn.  (Our air horn uses so much compressed air that we had to save its use for emergencies only since we are without auxiliary air supply to the engine.)

Our goal was to power through Deception Pass at slack tide.  This Pass is only 350 feet across at its narrowest which means powerfully strong currents running through there.  So, with almost no visibility and the human fog horn and all eyes on deck and Justin’s masterful piloting we flew through Deception Pass with the wind at our back and water swirling in all directions.  Suddenly the Deception Pass Bridge loomed overhead.

P1070537

Onward through the fog.

In no time at all we popped out the other side into bright blue skies.

P1070541

See the bridge behind us?

P1070542

From here it was pretty smooth sailing for another six hours.  A wonderful lazy day, napping, reading, and writing while Chris piloted us homeward.

A little before six we were passing Shilshole Marina and coming upon the Ballard Locks.

P1070546

Then it was an hour’s wait for our turn in the locks.

P1070548

At last we were nestled into the small locks

P1070551

and soon spit out the other side

P1070554

where it was only about three minutes to our dock.  Yea!

P1060204

Home at last – even though we never left!            THE END

I woke up really early this morning and enjoyed the peace and solitude of the new day.

P1070502

It was so nice I snuck back below, made some coffee and as I tiptoed back up the stairs I came upon a great blue heron sitting on the rail.  We were both so startled that we both squawked and took off in opposite directions, me spilling my coffee on the stairs as I fled.

Soon Justin and Huck made their morning trek to shore.

P1070505

As they got close, up popped an otter.  Then four or five otter heads popped up on the shore.  They all ran down to the water and jumped in and started to swim away just as another six otters swam over to meet them from the other shore.  As they all met, down they dove to their favorite breakfast spot.

We were underway by 8

P1070507

under blue skies and the calmest seas ever.

P1070513

We were all on the bow enjoying the beautiful day and for some reason Huckleberry must have sensed our joy and he started pouncing about and barking and barking.  (He never barks.)  He was just so happy!

P1070510

The next thing you know, we spotted Orcas!

P1070515

Several pairs all coming together and as we got close we idled the engine and just watched them play and play.  I think they were as happy as us that day.

By 11 we were pulling entering Bellingham Bay

P1070523

and into our slip next to Zenith.

P1070525

We spent the rest of the day wandering around Bellingham and hanging out with Justin’s childhood buddy, Jules and his family.

P1070528

Such an amazing day of wildlife sitings and visits with friends.

We departed our linear mooring at 10

P1070436

with the help of our top two deck hands

P1070438

and cruised from Stuart to Sucia Island past many interesting sites.

P1070441

P1070442

P1070443

There were some spots where the water was so churned up by the currents converging (tide rips) it was impossible to steer a straight line.

P1070448

Speaking of steering, here’s the Wheel for the boat.

P1070454

This big wheel is for shifting to forward, neutral, and reverse.  The little wheel is the throttle.

P1070453

But for the most part, it was a lazy relaxing passage, especially in the Chart Room.

P1070450

Meanwhile in the Pilot House the Flags are neatly stowed.

P1070452

At last we enter Echo Bay.

P1070456

Check out these cliffs along the way in.

P1070457

Meanwhile dear ol’ Huck is patiently waiting to get off the boat.

P1070462

After a quick lunch we row ashore

P1070466

and take a hike around the island

P1070468

to the Ghost Caves

P1070470

Back on the beach we almost lost Huckleberry as he became one with the driftwood.

P1070484

This must be doggy heaven – sticks everywhere.

P1070483

Happy Dog!

P1070477

Back on the boat Justin went for a very quick dip.

P1070491

Then we had quiet time with lots of reading and relaxing.

P1070492

Dinner was great as always.

P1070494

Topped off by chocolate and an amazing 1977 Dow’s Port – Thank you Scott.

P1070499

Ahhhhhh. . . .
