Sayonara Again

Well, it’s time once again to say Sayonara to my dear Christo and head back to sunny Coronado.  But before I go I want to share some more experiences from my time here.  Last weekend Chris and I drove to the Dassai Sake Brewery up in the mountains nearby.  Chris found this place on one of his bike rides.

From here we drove along some of the tiny back roads that Chris loves to bike.

This is a typical countryside scene here.  I never knew there could be so many different shades of green in one place.

P1050826

We stopped here for Chris to show me one of his favorite spots.  This tiny stone bridge.

P1050828

And over by our car (did you see our little Cube in the background above?) was a beautiful garden and shrine

P1050837

and this very steep stairway to heaven.

P1050836

We didn’t climb these stairs this time.  Chris has done it and said there’s a real pretty temple up there.  When we got home we switched from the Cube to the Breezers and biked to another of Chris’ favorite spots that he wanted to show me.

This is a tiny, tiny store.  I’m standing in the opposite corner to take this picture.  And for those who might not be into this, what you’re looking at is a wall of very good scotches.  It’s amazing what you can find in this funky little town of Iwakuni.

So that was Saturday.  On Sunday we hopped on our bikes and rode along the river

to the Kintai Bridge, Iwakuni’s famous landmark.

P1050848

We wandered around the park on the other side of the bridge

P1050859

where I found a  hint of cherry blossoms

but most will bloom right after I leave.  We wandered through the Iwakuni Art Museum which had a lot of pottery, Japanese swords, Tsuba (sword guards), body armor, helmets, and folding screens.  Out front was this “Charcoal Gas Engine” Jeep that was used from 1938-1946.

P1050858

Then we wandered over to the food booths and parked our bikes

P1050863

and checked out the stuff on a stick like fish

P1050865

and  ? ? ? ?

P1050864

And then there was the ice cream (not on a stick) but how to decide what flavor to get?

P1050867

On the way home we rode by one of the two sake breweries by our house to see if they were open.  Here’s Chris chatting with the proprietor.  Neither spoke the other’s language at all but sometimes that just doesn’t matter.

P1050874

Chris bought one of their higher end sake’s and this fellow ran back and gave us these two beautiful sake cups.

P1050963

I took this picture that was on the wall while they were chatting.  Look familiar?

P1050876

From here we stopped by our little market to buy the fixin’s for sashimi to enjoy with our delicious sake purchase.

P1050877

What a wonderful way to wrap up our time together here in Japan.

Photo 11: A Pop of Color

The title explains the assignment for today.  We’ve all seen how dramatic a pop of color can be when the colors are strong and vibrant.  I took this photo yesterday to show a more subtle version of this theme.  It’s interesting to see the color choice for the flower pots and how they blend in with the background.  Only the color of the flowers stands out.

Today we were to capture an image of warmth using the sun as the light source.  Lucky for me we had a sunny day.  I’d just come back from a long walk when I received this assignment and didn’t have time to head out for another walk.  On my way home I had just stopped at our little market and picked out these flowers because they reminded me of this warm sunny spring day.  So they became my image of warmth.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I am.

Today we are to look at lines and curves in nature.  Here in Japan, outside of the forests, it seems like every tree in every park or yard or streetside is sculpted to maximize its shape or curve.  I find it quite fascinating.  Here are a couple of examples.  The first one I call The Dancing Tree.

And this one reminds of of something from Alice in Wonderland’s Tea Party with the Mad Hatter.

The different levels of the tree are reflected in the local architecture.

Okinawa and Yamaguchi

Tags

We’ve been back from Okinawa for more than a week but I still have a few more stories to tell.  One day we wandered off to explore Okinawa World which included the Gyokusendo Caves.  These caves were created over 300,000 years ago and are considered the biggest cave system in Japan with an overall length of 5,000 meters.  Currently 890 meters are open to the public with the remainder preserved for research.  Photos were not allowed.  The caves were interesting to me for two reasons.  One is that it was so warm in there and two was there were so many lakes and waterfalls.  Pretty cool place.

While at Oki World we had our first Blue Seal Ice Cream Cone.  This was on the list of must have’s.  It’s very creamy with lots of interesting flavors.

P1050659

We also visited this Habushu brewery.  Not sure if I should call this sake or whiskey or wine.  But whatever it is, it’s famous in Okinawa for it’s special ingredient…

P1050661

You can also get it keg style.

P1050663

This Habu Snake belongs to the pit viper family and is closely related to the rattlesnake and copperhead.   Check out this napping tangle.

P1050660

This was not on our must have list!

Moving on to another day and another outing, we went for a walk looking for a brewery that didn’t exist.  So we typed in something else on google maps  (like lunch spot) and ended up wandering up some steep back country roads of Okinawa

P1050701

where we found the…

P1050707

It was a very unassuming place high up on a hill

P1050705

with an amazing view.

P1050706

Inside was very small but very busy.

P1050702

Check out their sound system.  The staff regularly turned the record over or replaced it with a different record.

P1050704

We had the most incredibly delicious lunch and bought several tasty treats for later.

P1050703

On Saturday, March 5 we got up at 0430 to be sure to catch the Space A on the Patriot Express back to Iwakuni.  No problem at all although we didn’t leave until 0930.  We got back home by 1130 and an hour later our good friend Tracy along with a few other friends picked us up and off we went for a weekend trip to Yamaguchi.  Why you ask?  Because on the first Sunday of the month at dawn Yamaguchi is known for its huge Flea Market.

We got to town with lots of time to wander the streets of Yamaguchi then dinner at one of our favorite Bavarian breweries.  (They have great pizza by the way.)

Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Brewery

The next day it was rainy and windy so most of the 300+ vendors were not at the market nor were the crowds so it was easy to check things out.  This booth had lots of old hand made tools.

P1050739

We bought this lantern

P1050740

And this wooden wall hanging.

P1050895

OK.  Now I’m finally caught up with these trips.  Ahhhh

Photo 6: Connect

Tags

The assignment for today was to think about what the word “connect” means to us.  So I went for a walk to see what I could find.  As I thought about all the different ways people connect to each other and how things are connected to other things I came up with several interesting photos.  The one I’ve chosen to share represents many different ways of connecting many different things.  Enjoy!

This one was a struggle to find today.  I took off on my bike to look for the image I had in mind with no luck – until…on my way home… I saw him.   A Snowy Egret with his bright yellow boots and all.

P1050815

It’s a bit grainy because I had to zoom in so far with my little point and shoot camera.  If I’d gotten closer I know he would have flown away.
