Argonaut II, Bellingham Bay, Echo Bay, Sucia Island

Thursday, August 4, 2016

I woke up really early this morning and enjoyed the peace and solitude of the new day.

P1070502

It was so nice I snuck back below, made some coffee and as I tiptoed back up the stairs I came upon a great blue heron sitting on the rail.  We were both so startled that we both squawked and took off in opposite directions, me spilling my coffee on the stairs as I fled.

Soon Justin and Huck made their morning trek to shore.

As they got close, up popped an otter.  Then four or five otter heads popped up on the shore.  They all ran down to the water and jumped in and started to swim away just as another six otters swam over to meet them from the other shore.  As they all met, down they dove to their favorite breakfast spot.

We were underway by 8

under blue skies and the calmest seas ever.

We were all on the bow enjoying the beautiful day and for some reason Huckleberry must have sensed our joy and he started pouncing about and barking and barking.  (He never barks.)  He was just so happy!

The next thing you know, we spotted Orcas!

P1070515

Several pairs all coming together and as we got close we idled the engine and just watched them play and play.  I think they were as happy as us that day.

By 11 we were pulling entering Bellingham Bay

and into our slip next to Zenith.

We spent the rest of the day wandering around Bellingham and hanging out with Justin’s childhood buddy, Jules and his family.

Such an amazing day of wildlife sitings and visits with friends.

Smooth Sailing

Argonaut II, Echo Bay, Ghost Caves, Sucia Island

We departed our linear mooring at 10

P1070436

with the help of our top two deck hands

P1070438

and cruised from Stuart to Sucia Island past many interesting sites.

P1070441

P1070442

P1070443

There were some spots where the water was so churned up by the currents converging (tide rips) it was impossible to steer a straight line.

P1070448

Speaking of steering, here’s the Wheel for the boat.

P1070454

This big wheel is for shifting to forward, neutral, and reverse.  The little wheel is the throttle.

P1070453

But for the most part, it was a lazy relaxing passage, especially in the Chart Room.

P1070450

Meanwhile in the Pilot House the Flags are neatly stowed.

P1070452

At last we enter Echo Bay.

P1070456

Check out these cliffs along the way in.

P1070457

Meanwhile dear ol’ Huck is patiently waiting to get off the boat.

P1070462

After a quick lunch we row ashore

P1070466

and take a hike around the island

P1070468

to the Ghost Caves

P1070470

Back on the beach we almost lost Huckleberry as he became one with the driftwood.

P1070484

This must be doggy heaven – sticks everywhere.

P1070483

Happy Dog!

P1070477

Back on the boat Justin went for a very quick dip.

P1070491

Then we had quiet time with lots of reading and relaxing.

P1070492

Dinner was great as always.

P1070494

Topped off by chocolate and an amazing 1977 Dow’s Port – Thank you Scott.

Ahhhhhh. . . .
