Greetings all. Chris and I are finally back together again in Japan. I haven’t had much to write yet because the weather is so hot and humid that to go outside is like stepping into a sauna. Even your glasses fog up right away. (I’m definitely not in Coronado any more.) Although things have been fairly quiet and low key so far we have done a little bit.

A common mode of transportation here is the “mamachiati.” This is a perfect example.

Note the cloths over the handlebars to protect your hands from the sun and the umbrella mounted on the handlebar, also for sun protection and lots of baskets.
Another observation is Chris’ latest footwear. $2.00 clogs with bike socks.
Another reason we’ve been laying low is ’cause Chris had a bit of a bike accident the day before I arrived and has been recovering from a forehead full of stitches. He’s doing fine as you can see.
Meanwhile back on base, construction continues full speed ahead keeping Chris very busy at work.
And back on the homefront, remember our trip to Sapporo last winter? We went to a Sake brewery and bought a wonderful bottle of sake that Chris was nice enough to save for my return. The bottle and “label” are beautiful and it’s so much fun to enjoy it in our wonderful sake cups.
This is festival season so we’re off to the Kintai Fireworks show tonight at the Kintai bridge. The whole town will be there and the show lasts an hour and a half with lots of food booths or everything on a stick.
So for now I’ll leave you with this interesting flower – a hibiscus maybe?

Tell us about the bike accident, please. And a question: How “bike friendly” are the drivers in Japan and the roadways and other physical infrastructure?

Hi Peter,
As for Chris’ accident, he was following another rider and he thinks the rider zigged and instead of zigging Chris went straight and hit a curb and landed on his helmet mostly. He said his sunglasses are what caused the gash in his forehead. No other bruises or bodily damage this time. The drivers are very courteous toward bikers here as there are so many bikes on the road and people drive very slowly. I can’t say much about the physical infrastructure of the roads from a bike perspective since I’ve not ridden much here. Chris will have to comment on that later. I know he is often riding on very narrow mountain roads with no traffic at all.

Sorry to hear that Chris had an accident. He looks pretty good and I’m glad he’s doing fine. Looks like they did a great job on the stitches! I can just imagine the heat and humidity. That makes it really tough to be out and about but knowing you both, you won’t let that get in the way of good fun and adventure. So glad you are once again back together.

Hi Mary,
After just a week the stitches have dissolved and Chris is doing great. It’s still way too hot to do much riding although it doesn’t seem to bother some people. Stay tuned for our next adventure coming up soon.
